- Dust reduces output. In dry, dusty months, dirty panels can lose a noticeable share of generation until cleaned.
- Uneven dirt causes hot spots. Bird droppings or leaves covering part of a panel can make cells overheat, damaging them over time.
- Small faults grow. A loose connector or failing fuse caught early is cheap to fix; missed, it can stop generation or become a safety risk.
How to clean solar panels safely
Best time: early morning or evening, when panels are cool. Spraying cold water on hot glass in the afternoon can stress it.
Do:
- Use plain water. Soft water is best; hard water can leave mineral spots.
- Use a soft sponge, microfibre cloth or long-handled soft brush.
- Clean from the side or from a walkway.
- Use mild, non-abrasive soap only for stubborn dirt, then rinse well.
